Restore the Legacy
A Historic Church.
A Civil Rights Landmark.
A Legacy Worth Protecting.
For more than 130 years, Little Union Baptist Church has stood as a beacon of faith, hope, and service in the heart of Shreveport, Louisiana. Since our founding in 1892 by just sixteen faithful members, this sacred place has welcomed generations of families, celebrated life's greatest milestones, and served as a source of strength during times of challenge.
But Little Union is more than a church.
It is a place where history was made.
During the Civil Rights Movement, under the courageous leadership of Reverend Claude Clifford McLain, Little Union Baptist Church became a gathering place for hope, courage, and peaceful action.
Our sanctuary welcomed mass meetings for the NAACP and CORE, served as a hub for voter registration efforts, and provided a safe place for those working to advance justice and equality throughout Northwest Louisiana.
Our legacy also includes generations of influential leaders, including the family of renowned civil rights attorney Johnnie Cochran, Jr., whose father faithfully served as a deacon at Little Union Baptist Church.
Today, we are honored to be recognized as an official site on the Louisiana Civil Rights Trail, preserving a story that continues to inspire generations.
Our Legacy
Why We Need Your Help
While our legacy is strong, time has taken its toll on our historic church.
Thanks to the support of the Louisiana Capital Outlay Program, we have taken an important first step toward restoring this treasured landmark. However, the State's funding covers only a portion of the overall restoration project.
Additional support from individuals, families, businesses, churches, foundations, and community partners is essential to fully restore and preserve this historic sanctuary.
Together, we can ensure that Little Union Baptist Church continues to serve as a place of worship, fellowship, education, and community outreach for generations to come.
